When I was a consultant in the water infrastructure business, I used to think that we had an informal orchestrating role in the industry where various collaborative efforts with different parts of the value chain would tend to funnel through us more often than not. That I thought was a highly valuable position to be in.
I very soon learnt that it was a rather different story. Our focus on our core competencies intensified and the digital age helped to crack open the idea of how collaboration occurred. While forming new relationships are much easier, quicker and more direct these days, I just feel like our approach has narrowed down a lot and we have lost a bit of our collaborative edge. Building more productive collaborations can be easy if we can overcome this version of the Lag.
